What is Kava?

Kava (pronounced kah-vah) is a traditional beverage made from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, which is found in the South Pacific.

The root is dried, ground up, and mixed with water to create a muddy-looking drink that’s known for its calming, grounding properties. But unlike many herbal teas or tonics, kava is unique.

It’s often consumed socially, like a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. For centuries, people in places like Fiji, Vanuatu, and Tonga have prepared and shared kava as part of social gatherings, village ceremonies, and daily wind-down routines. Kava has been a part of life since ancient times. It has been woven into South Pacific celebrations such as marriages, funerals, births, and anniversaries.

What does it do?

Kava is well known for its physiological effects that bring mental and physical relaxation. In fact, the Latin name for the kava plant, Piper Methysticum, translates as “intoxicating pepper.”

Kava stands out from other herbal drinks because of its distinct effects, its rich cultural roots, and the ceremonial way it's traditionally consumed. It’s more than just a drink—it’s part of a lifestyle and a ritual, especially in Pacific Island cultures.

Kavalactones

The active ingredients in kava (kavalactones) are the “why” behind kava’s relaxing properties. When consumed, the kavalactones interact with the limbic system of the brain, specifically the amygdala. The amygdala helps regulate emotions, so this interaction can produce a sensation of mental and physical relaxation.

If you're exploring kava for the first time, you’ll likely come across a few terms that are new to you—like “heady” and “heavy,” or “reverse tolerance.”

Don’t worry, we’ve got guides to walk you through it all. Just know this: starting with kava is all about taking it slow, finding your rhythm, and enjoying the experience.

Kava Tips

Here’s what we’ve learned over years of enjoying kava. We’ll share our personal tips and recommendations for having an excellent kava experience.

  • Kava is all about taking it slow, finding your rhythm, and enjoying the experience.

  • Give it time

Kava can feel more subtle than some first-time customers expect. Find a comfortable setting, slow down, and give yourself time to notice the experience rather than looking for something dramatic.

Kava can also build gradually over a session, so give it some time before deciding whether you would like more.

  • Follow the preparation directions

Serving size and preparation matter. Start with the serving listed on your pouch and use the preparation method we shared in your quick-start guide.

  •  Mouth tingling can happen

Temporary tingling or mild numbness around the mouth can be part of the kava experience
